3月21日 Other StuffI'm trimming the bookmark fat, offloading links I'll likely never revisit. At least not the way I have them ordered right now. My browser's bookmarks are four megabytes of chaos right now.

3月16日 Stuff3月15日 Metaphysics as a Waste of Time'The Buddha had no theories about the creation of the world or the existence of God. These topics were, of course, extremely fascinating, but he refused to discuss them. Why? "Because, my disciples, they will not help you, they are not useful in the quest for holiness; they do not lead to peace and to the direct knowledge of nibbana." He told one monk who kept pestering him about cosmology to the detriment of his yoga and ethical practise that he was like a wounded man who refused medical treatment until he learned the name of the person who had shot the arrow, and what village he came from. He would die before he got this useless information. What difference did it make to learn that a God had created the world? Grief, suffering, and pain would still exist. "I am preaching a cure for these unhappy conditions here and now," the Buddha explained to his metaphysically inclined monk, "so always remember what I have not explained to you and why I have not explained it."'

3月9日 Global PollAwhile ago I linked to the "Anholt Nation Brands Index" I stumbled across something similar, a "global poll": a "BBC World Service poll of 28,000 people across 27 countries". It asked those polled about a countries' negative or positive impact on the world. Canada does very well, but the article suggests this is largely the product of ignorance. Good enough for me, but the countries that were viewed more negatively was the more curious aspect. Its a short but interesting article.
An Angry Elephant is Bad NewsSeems as useful a generalization as any.
